Smart Bioinspired Technologies for the Development of a Miniaturized Legged Robotic System

Abstract

As we attempt to achieve greater performance from robotic systems, the study of biological systems reveals a wealth of systems that display attractive features that we may wish to incorporate into a robotic system. This paper presents results from various studies designing individual biomimetic subsystems intended for use in robotic design. In particular, several subsystems have been inspired by systems observed in jumping spiders. For example, focusing on one biological system, jumping spiders can: make single leaps of up to 100 times their body length using hybrid actuation systems based both on muscle and a centralized hydraulic system; climb steep, smooth surfaces, such as glass using dry adhesion; climb rough surfaces, such as rock using claws; and accurately detect forces applied to/by their legs through miniaturized sensor arrays. Results from the innovative subsystems studied are presented as well as from a robot incorporating some of these subsystems.
