Development and Evaluation of Operational Interface Using Touch Screen for Remote Operation of Mobile Robot

Abstract

In this paper, we examined the application of a touch screen to an operational interface of a mobile robot remote operation system. This study aims at improving the maneuverability of a robot by developing a user-friendly operational interface so that everyone can operate the robot easily and safely. Specifically, we developed three kinds of touch-screen interfaces for remote operation of an omni-directional mobile robot and examined the features and maneuverability of the interfaces by performing driving experiments in a straight passage and slalom. In addition, we evaluated the understandability of the operation methods of each interfaces by conducting a questionnaire survey after experiments. The possibility is confirmed that users who are unaccustomed in mechatronics equipments, such as the elderly and beginners, could operate the robot easily and safely with touch-screen interfaces, although the touch-screen interfaces developed in this study are inferior to the joystick interface in maneuverability.
