Abstract

Cardiogenic shock (CS) occurs in less than 10% of patients hospitalized with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Early revascularization for CS impacts overall survival . The chapter provides information on diagnosis and causes, incidence, pathophysiology and treatment of cardiogenic shock. It will discuss new treatment approaches to different treatment options with special attention to circulatory support, such as Intra-aortic balloon pump, which has long been the main device of mechanical therapy for CS. Use of an IABP improves coronary and peripheral perfusion. IABP support should be implanted as quickly as possible, even before any transfer for revascularization. Temporary mechanical circulatory support with left vetricular assist devices (LVADs) appeared to improve survival of patients with cardiogenic shock.
