Abstract

Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is the commonest congenital cardiac abnormality with an estimated prevalence of 1-2%. BAV is increasingly recognised to have a heritable component. The natural history of this disease includes a predisposition to adverse cardiovascular outcomes including both valvular and aortic disease, and given the prevalence this places a significant burden on cardiovascular care throughout the world. In this chapter, we provide a comprehensive review of the etiology, epidemiology and pathophysiology of BAV before proceeding to discuss its clinical investigation, prognosis and management.
