Abstract

The purpose of this book chapter is to highlight the importance of Ser/Thr kinases in regulating arterial smooth muscle growth as a key component of CAD. Special focus will be given to distinct protein kinases and their unique roles in controlling arterial smooth muscle proliferation, migration, matrix balance and apoptosis. Discussion will cover the influence of altered hemodynamics and associated fluid stresses as well as iatrogenic complications following vascular intervention and their impact on arterial growth. Lastly, thorough discussion will be included regarding an emerging downstream target of Ser/Thr-directed protein kinases, that is, the cytoskeletal focal adhesion element vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP), which has been gaining momentum as a key player in growth regulation of arterial smooth muscle.
