Abstract

Microarray has emerged as a promising new technology for broad-spectrum pathogen detection, making it possible to test for the presence of thousands of viruses simultaneously. A microarray containing probes for all viruses and bacteria could be used for diagnostic analysis, as well as for research purposes, for screening of environmental samples or for epidemiological surveillance. In a routine diagnostic set-up, a microarray containing probes for all human pathogens could replace hundreds of individual PCR-assays and remove the need for a clear clinical hypothesis regarding a suspected pathogen. The Lawrence Livermore Microbial Detection Array (LLMDA) contains probes for all sequenced viruses and bacteria, and has been used for detection of viruses in both clinical samples and vaccine products. We have established a platform for microarray identification of viral pathogens and demonstrated the real life utility and sensitivity of the microarray technique for broad-spectrum pathogen detection. The LLMDA has also shown utility in identifying bacterial pathogens from human clinical samples and environmental samples.
