Abstract

In the past decades, network-based metabolic pathway analysis has emerged and become powerful tools for understanding and assessing inherent network properties in genomic scale. In this chapter, the concept of metabolic pathways analysis is introduced. The mathematic principle of two basic pathway analysis approaches, extreme pathway and elementary flux mode, are described and compared. As a detailed example, the process of elementary flux analysis of glycerol metabolic network and its application for succinate production under anaerobic and aerobic conditions are illustrated. And other recent examples of metabolic pathway analysis for analyzing network prosperities and guiding metabolic engineering are also summarized.
