Abstract

The research results of the angiogenesis features in patients with gastric cancer have been presented in this paper, testifying to heterogeneity of tumor vessels. The differences concern both the morphology of vessels and their clinical importance. The obtained data have allowed us to formulate a hypothesis of «cavitary type» of angiogenesis consisting in the formation of cavitary structures in tumor stroma and the adjacent gastric mucosa being then lined by endothelial cells and merged into the blood vessels of the organ. It seems plausible that the described type of vessel formation can be connected with a violation of the adhesive properties of tumor cells, inflammatory changes in the tumor stroma and the adjacent tissues as well as with microvascular hyperpermeability. At the same time, the relation of «cavitary type» vessels with the lymphovascular invasion, the presence of metastases in gastric lymph nodes and the decrease of survival rate of gastric cancer patients testifies that the described type of angiogenesis possibly plays a key role in the tumor progression. The further study of mechanisms of “cavitary type” vessel formation will undoubtedly promote a search of new opportunities in treatment of gastric cancer.
