Hopf Bifurcation in a Syphilis Model with Discrete Time Delays

Abstract

A syphilis model with two discrete time delays accounting for temporary immunity ( tau1) and incubation period ( tau2 ) of the newborns is formulated. In this study, we present the syphilis model with vertical transmission and interaction between mothers and babies. Stability of endemic equilibrium point is investigated. Using normal form theory and center manifold argument, an explicit formula that determines the stability, direction and other properties of bifurcating periodic solutions is derived. Comprehensive numerical simulations are performed to verify the results with biological interpretations.
